ITIL V3 to V4
A set of suggested practices for managing IT services is known as the ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library). The transition from ITIL v3 to ITIL v4 brought significant changes to the framework. ITIL v4 was released in 2019 and represents a modernized approach to IT service management, incorporating the latest trends and practices in the IT industry.
Here are some key differences between ITIL v3 and ITIL v4:
- Service Value System (SVS): ITIL v4 introduces the Service Value System, which provides a holistic view of how all the components and activities within an organization work together to deliver value to customers. It emphasizes the importance of value co-creation and integration of different practices.
- Four Dimensions Model: The ITIL v4 framework adds the Four Dimensions Model, which includes four perspectives that need to be considered in any ITSM initiative: Organizations and People, Information and Value Streams and Processes, Partners and Suppliers, and Technology.
- Guiding Principles: ITIL v4 introduces seven guiding principles that should guide the decisions and actions of ITSM practitioners. Focusing on value, beginning where you are, moving forward iteratively with feedback, collaborating and fostering visibility, thinking and working holistically, keeping it simple and doable, and automating and optimising are some of these ideas.
- Service Value Chain: ITIL v4 introduces the Service Value Chain, which is a flexible set of interconnected activities that create value for customers. The six activities that make up the service value chain are plan, improve, engage, design & transition, get & build, deliver & support.
- Practices: ITIL v3's processes have been restructured into a set of 34 practices in ITIL v4. These practices cover a wide range of ITSM activities, including Incident Management, Change Control, Problem Management, Service Level Management, and more.
- Continual Improvement Model: ITIL v4 adopts a more dynamic Continual Improvement model, encouraging organizations to continuously assess and improve their practices and services.
- Emphasis on Collaboration: ITIL v4 emphasizes the importance of collaboration across different departments and teams to achieve service excellence and deliver value to customers.
- Certification Scheme: The ITIL v4 certification scheme has been updated, providing a clearer path for IT professionals to progress through the various levels of ITIL expertise.
Overall, the transition from ITIL v3 to ITIL v4 represents a shift from a process-focused approach to a more holistic and flexible approach that considers the entire service value chain and encourages continuous improvement and collaboration. Organizations and IT professionals are encouraged to upgrade their knowledge and practices to align with the updated ITIL v4 framework.
